An Indian Institute of Management (IIM) graduate resigned from his job just 10 days after joining. In a post on Reddit, a user recalled his experience as an inside sales representative when he was assigned to train a newly hired management trainee.

This trainee was from one of the top three IIMs, had an impressive salary package of over Rs 21 lakh per annum and even received a Rs 2 lakh joining bonus.

“In my previous avatar as an Inside sales rep, when I was just 21, they assigned me an Account executive who was a management trainee straight out of the top three IIM. His CTC was above 21 LPA with a 2 lakh joining bonus," the user wrote.

On his first day, the newly hired IIM graduate was excited and went to visit a distributor in Gurgaon. Ten days later, he resigned.

When asked why, he responded, “Yaar, mai socha woh marketing mei hire kiye mujhe, and now I’m told to do sales for one year (I thought they hired me for marketing, but now they are making me do sales for a year)."

“Aisa rehta hei kya market? (Is the market really like this?)" the trainee added.

Surprised by the reaction, the Reddit user told him that all accounts in sales were similar. But the trainee had already made up his mind and replied, “Mai nehi karna bhai ye wali khel hei (I don’t want to play this nonsense game)."

The user added that his team lead told him such resignations were common among B-school graduates, many of whom leave within three months of their campus placements. He mentioned that the trainee switched to an operations and supply chain role for Rs 16 lakh per annum despite having student loans.

“Clearly sales is the apex predator among the corporate jobs," the user concluded.

Another added, “I assume that these newly minted IIM grads are schooled in Sales for 1 year or more before they move into Marketing so that they can understand the harsh ground realities of Sales and empathize with Sales folks rather than curse them for not being able to sell their products. Then again, I could be wrong."

“Basically ego is deeply ingrained in people, it gets magnified with IIM tag. The tag is primarily a ticket to a high CTC but does not mean you will always be doing high end work. Also, IIM are not all the same. Places like IIM Rohtak and Kashipur are almost tier-2 compared to A/B/C," an individual shared.
