Kesari 2 Director Karan Tyagi Reacts To ‘Negative Comments’ On Ananya Panday: ‘It’s Tragic’ | Exclusive
Karan Singh Tyagi reveals he cast Ananya Panday in Kesari Chapter 2 after watching Gehraiyaan and lauds her hard work in his film.

Director Karan Singh Tyagi is riding high on the appreciation he and his team of actors – Akshay Kumar and R Madhavan – are receiving for Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh. In a classic case of being cast against her grain and holding her own against the male actors, Ananya Panday has also surprised many. However, a certain set of netizens are still not impressed with her act. For the unversed, she plays a young lawyer in the film who helps Akshay’s CS Shankar win the legal battle against the British Empire in the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, the debut director reacts to the trolling Ananya is being subjected to. “The audiences have given her character so much love that I would like to look at the positive. I would like to look at the love that she’s getting. Two days ago, there was a screening in Hyderabad. Some people sent me videos from there. The audience was clapping at her entry scene. She was one female lawyer in a room filled with men. And that in itself is the perfect response to all the negative comments," he asserts.

However, Karan is quick to admit that hate on social media in general has intensified now more than ever. “That’s the age we’re living in. People jump to conclusions very easily. There are clickbait headlines written, but as they say, kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna. We just have to put our head down and work. I’m all for dissent and criticism because that gives you the opportunity to learn. But I see very unnecessary hate on social media today, which tends to become toxic certain times. It’s tragic! This is the ill-effect of social media and we’ve to learn to live it with," he says.
Karan further reveals that Ananya was roped in for Kesari Chapter 2 in 2022 and it was her Gehraiyaan act that nudged the decision to cast her. “I remember watching Gehraiyaan and I was moved by her performance in it. It was after watching that film that I met her and offered her the role of Dilreet Gill. I’ve to say that she’s remarkable in Kesari Chapter 2 and has put in so much hard work. She went through dialect classes for over a year. She has studied the mannerisms of female lawyers. We visited the Bombay High Court where she saw a female lawyer practicing in action," he recalls.
Lauding her prep, the lawyer-turned-director continues, “She read a lot of literature on the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In fact, there’s a book where people have written several poems on the massacre and tragedy. That book, kind of, became her Bible. She would carry that book on the set. She imbibed the role of Dilreet Gill so well. Ananya has a mix of vulnerability and steely resolve. She brought that out and exhibited them beautifully."
