Black Warrant stars Zahaan Kapoor as Sunil Kumar Gupta, a young and shy man who becomes the prison warden at Tihar Jail.

The creators of Sacred Games are back with a thrilling new show, Black Warrant and recently, dropped its trailer just a week before its release. Based on the book Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer by Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury, which dives deep into the country’s most dangerous jail. The Netflix series stars Zahaan Kapoor as Sunil Kumar Gupta, a young and shy man who becomes the prison warden at Tihar Jail. Soon after he joins the duty, he faces challenges in his new life.
The trailer also provides a glimpse of Rahul Bhat’s character Rajesh Tomar, along with the references of the Ranga Billa murders and appearance of a character looking like Charles Sobhraj, played by Sidhant Gupta.

As per Netflix, the official synopsis read, “Sunil Gupta steps unwittingly into the jaws of a system where power and reputation reign supreme and survival demands a price. Alongside him, his two trusted fellow jailers confront Tihar’s notorious inmates and the entrenched politics. Armed with little more than grit and determination, the trio faces towering challenges within Tihar. This never-seen-before account traces the deeply personal stories of inmates, officers, and their complex dynamics."
Vikramaditya Motwane shared that Black Warrant allowed the team to explore a world that is usually out of everyone’s sight, “that’s tough, complicated and full of contradictions." The story of Sunil Kumar Gupta’s experience in Tihar Jail gives a fresh look at these challenges. Motwane further explained that the trailer just provided a minor look into the series. According to the filmmaker, viewers will slowly witness the tough and complicated reality of life in prison. He also mentioned that the series will reveal both the tough and human sides of the characters, which will be an interesting story for viewers to follow.
The Netflix series is set to premiere on January 10. Led by Zahan Kapoor, the prison drama also stars Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur, Sidhant Gupta, along with special appearances from Rajshri Deshpande, Tota Roy Chaudhary and Rajendra Gupta.
Vikramaditya Motwane collaborated with Netflix before for Ananya Panday starrer CTRL. He also directed a web series titled Jubilee, featuring Sidhant Gupta, Wamiqa Gabbi, Aparshakti Khurana, Nandish Singh Sandhu, Aditi Rao Hydari and Ram Kapoor.
