The 2025 season of the Indian Premier League is all set to roll out on Saturday as holders Kolkata Knight Riders welcome Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the Eden Gardens in the curtain-raiser, but all eyes will be on the Clasico between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings on Sunday as he two most successful sides in the history of the tournament go head to head against each other.
MI, who slumped to a bottom-of-the-table finish in the previous edition, will look to right the wrongs of the 2024 campaign under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, who has been trusted with the skipper’s armband despite his failure last season.

MI managed to hold onto some star names including Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumarah, Tilak Varma and Pandya, while also roping in familiar faces at the auction table to maintain their strong core with some added firepower.
Former Australian batter Aaron Finch opined that MI have potential running all the way through their unit and have seasoned match-winners who could turn the tide of games.
“I just feel everything is coming back together for the Mumbai Indians, they’ve just got match winners and experience right throughout their lineup," Finch began.
“If you look down there, if I’m pointing at a couple of superstars, you forget Rohit, he’s a legend of the game, but they’ve got Sky, Tilak, Hardik, Bolt, Bumrah. There’s everything there to post a huge score if they happen to bat first, but also wicket taking ability through Bumrah, through Bolt," the Australian said.
“These guys are seasoned campaigners who know how to get the job done under pressure," he aded.
“I think in a tournament like the IPL, I know that they’re notoriously slow starters, but I think it might be time for Mumbai back up the ladder."
MI also retained the services of Naman Dhir as they used their Right To Match card at the auction for the promising batter to bring the 25-year-old back to the Blue fold. Finch backed the decision and voiced that the 2025 campaign could prove to be a breakout season for the youngster.
“I think it’s somebody like Naman Dhir. I know he’s only played seven IPL games, but he’s striking at 177. And you look at the way that T20 has evolved over the last months. It’s almost gone to a new level in the last two years," Finch said.
“I think it’s these type of players who can come in and be so explosive from the start. The young Indian players in particular are so fearless now. They’re prepared to take it on from ball one, even if they’ve played one or two games," he continued.
Finch also touched upon the ever-changing landscape and culture around the game as it moves towards a more aggressive acceleration in terms of picking up runs.
“Whereas in the past, you might have got guys that are looking to knock the ball around and almost try and buy themselves another game. That’s not the case anymore. These youngsters, like Naman Dhir, they’re prepared to take it on from the start. And I think that that’s such an important role that he’ll play in that middle to lower order. So I think that he’ll be a breakout star," he added.
