Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a massive heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match and has been rushed to a hospital in Savar, which is on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka. Local media described his condition as ‘critical’, saying he needed to be put on life support.
“He underwent initial checks at a local hospital, where mild heart issues were suspected. Efforts were made to transport him to Dhaka, but on the way to the helipad, he experienced severe chest pain and had to be rushed back. Medical reports later confirmed it was a massive heart attack," Dr Debashish Chowdhury, chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

“It is a difficult time for all of us. He is currently under observation, and the medical team is doing everything possible for his recovery," Chowdhury added.
Tamim was playing a match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar when he experienced chest discomfort. The authorities initially made arrangements to airlift him to Dhaka by helicopter, but he could not be flown from the BKSP ground and was taken to Fazilatunnesa Hospital.
Later, the doctors offered an official update: “He returned to us in a critical condition. We can call it a heart attack, and we subsequently did an angiogram and angioplasty to remove the blockage. The medical procedure has gone smoothly. He is currently under observation. The swift coordination between the medical staff at BKSP and the hospital ensured Tamim was treated quickly."
Tamim has been playing local matches and doing commentary stints since retiring from international cricket in January.
“I have been away from international cricket for quite some time, and the gap will not close. My chapter in international cricket is over," Tamim wrote in his retirement post on Facebook. “I have been reflecting on this for some time, and with the Champions Trophy ahead, I don’t want discussions about me to disrupt the team’s focus. I stepped away from the national contract a long time ago for this reason, although the media sometimes suggested otherwise," he added.
“For someone who hasn’t been in a BCB contract for a year, there’s no point in such discussions. Every cricketer has the right to decide their future, and I’ve taken my time to make this decision. Now, I feel the moment has arrived. Captain Nazmul Hossain sincerely requested me to return, and I also spoke with the selection panel. I am grateful they believe I am still capable, but I followed my heart," he added.
