The Maharashtra government on Friday said that it has allocated funds to build a grand memorial of great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra – at the spot where Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had held him, hostage.

“I swear on my mother, once this memorial is built, more people will come to see it than your Taj Mahal. If they don’t, you can change my name — My name is not Devendra Fadnavis," he said.

Fadnavis had vowed at an event on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s 395th birth anniversary on February 19 this year, that the Maharashtra government would acquire the site where the Maratha ruler was held under arrest and build a grand memorial, Maharashtra CMO said on Friday.

“Necessary funds for this project would be allocated in the state budget. This government decision fulfills that promise," the CMO posted on X.

The CMO said that the significance of the decision is the “preservation and promotion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s historical valor, conservation of Maharashtra’s historical heritage and development of tourism, and establishing Maharashtra’s historical imprint at an important historical site in Agra".
