Workers of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Tuesday allegedly slapped a D-Mart employee in Mumbai for not speaking in Marathi. The video of the incident is going viral on social media.

The incident took place at the D-Mart store in Versova, Andheri (West), news agency PTI reported.

The altercation began after the store employee told a customer, “I will not speak in Marathi, I will speak only in Hindi. I don’t know Marathi. Do what you want to do."

Following this, when the MNS came to know about the employee’s comments, a group of workers led by the party’s Versova unit president Sandesh Desai went to the store and allegedly slapped the staffer.

The MNS workers in the video can be seen asking the employee to apologise for his behavior. The employee in the video can be seen holding his ears, as he was asked to say sorry.

The store staffer later apologised for his behaviour.

MNS, a party founded by Raj Thackeray, has been known for its stance regarding the use of Marathi in Maharashtra, particularly in the service and commercial sectors.

This is not the first time MNS workers have been involved in an assault over Marathi language enforcement. In 2022, a restaurant manager in Navi Mumbai was allegedly slapped by MNS workers after he refused to play Marathi songs immediately upon request.
