Ben Affleck is choosing to keep the real reason behind his divorce from Jennifer Lopez private. The couple, who rekindled their romance after nearly two decades and married in 2022, finalised their divorce earlier this year after two years of marriage.
In a candid interview for GQ’s April 2025 cover, Affleck, 52, revealed that while their split wasn’t due to any scandal or major event, he feels too “embarrassed" to share the details. “The truth is, when people ask, ‘Hey, what happened?’ there’s no big event or moment," he said. “It’s just a story about two people trying to figure out their lives and relationships like everyone else."

The Accountant 2 actor explained that as he’s grown older, he’s realised that most relationship breakdowns aren’t about one defining moment. “There’s no ‘So-and-so did this,’ or ‘This was the big event,’" Affleck said. “It ends up sounding like a couple’s therapy session — and you’d probably tune out after a while."
Affleck admitted that he avoids discussing the details because it feels “vulnerable" and “embarrassing." “You start going, ‘Okay, clearly this person has these issues, and clearly, they have those issues.’ And I don’t want to share that," he explained.
Affleck also reflected on his involvement in Lopez’s 2024 documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which chronicled their rekindled relationship and subsequent marriage. “Part of me thought, ‘If I’m going to participate, I want to do it honestly and make it interesting.’ I found it to be an intriguing examination," he said.
Despite the documentary’s intimate portrayal of their relationship, Affleck clarified that it had no bearing on their split. “It’s not like you can watch that documentary and suddenly understand the issues we had," the Air actor-director noted.
Affleck also praised Lopez, 55, for her ability to handle fame with grace. “Jennifer has handled celebrity more adeptly and adroitly than I have," he said, adding, “My temperament leans toward being more reserved and private than hers."
