The history of D915 dates back to 1916, when the Russian army captured the city of Trabzon. At the time, the army constructed this road using hand tools. While some sections of the road were paved with asphalt, most of it remains covered in loose gravel. Initially, it may not seem dangerous, but as one progresses and encounters gravel instead of asphalt, the fear intensifies.

The road features 38 extremely sharp hairpin bends, with the most dangerous section known as the Derebaşı Turns. Seventeen of these bends stretch over a five-kilometre section at an altitude of 5,600 to 6,600 feet above sea level.

There are no guardrails along the road to prevent vehicles from plunging down the steep slopes. In its narrowest sections, only one vehicle can pass at a time, making overtaking nearly impossible. During bad weather, the road becomes even more perilous. Heavy snowfall and rain make driving conditions treacherous, leading to the road being closed from October to June every year.
