Muhammad Yunus is preparing Bangladesh "for elections that will allow the people of Bangladesh to choose the path forward for their nation”, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

Wishing Dhaka On ‘Bangladesh National Day’, the United States said that the interim government of Muhammad Yunus in the country is preparing for elections. Muhammad Yunus, who heads the caretaker government installed after an August revolution, is facing increasing pressure to set a date for the elections in the country after the student-led uprising that toppled ex-premier Sheikh Hasina in August.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is preparing Bangladesh “for elections that will allow the people of Bangladesh to choose the path forward for their nation", US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

    The statement read, “The United States supports Bangladesh in its journey toward a bright and democratic future. We look forward to continuing our partnership promoting economic development and regional security in the Indo-Pacific."

    What Muhammad Yunus Said On Bangladesh Elections

    Earlier, Muhammad Yunus said, “Election dates could be fixed by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026." He had then said that his interim government has launched commissions to oversee a raft of reforms which are needed for the elections to be held.

    “Throughout, I have emphasised that reforms should take place first before the arrangements for an election," he said, adding, “If the political parties agree to hold the election on an earlier date with minimum reforms, such as having a flawless voter list, the election could be held by the end of November."

      Muhammad Yunus dismissed reports of a “possible coup" by the military saying that “false information is being spread in an attempt to mislead the people."

      He said, “As you know, since the interim government took office, there has been a festival of rumours in the media and social media. In order to destabilise the country, attempts are being made to mislead the people by spreading false information one after another."
