Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin found early joy on his return to his hometown team Chennai Super Kings as he struck with his very first over to remove Will Jacks during CSK’s IPL 2025 opener against Mumbai Indians on Sunday.
Ashwin dismissed Jacks for 11 runs off 7 deliveries as the Chennai-born spinner required just four deliveries in yellow to roll back the years.

Ashwin began his career with CSK back in the year 2008 and donned the famous yellow drip till the year 2015 in a trophy-laden stint. The 38-year-old went on to play for Rising Pune Supergiants, Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals before returning to the side from the Tamil Nadu capital city.
CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to put Suryakumar Yadav’s MI to bat first and saw early returns as new pacer Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for a duck. The seamer doubled down on his wicket tally on his debut game for the Chennai franchise with the scalp of Ryan Rickelton for 13 runs off 7 deliveries.
Ashwin came in as the first bowling change as he removed Jacks to reduce Mumbai to 36/3 in the fifth over.
New Chennai boy Noor Ahmed, tipped to make a big impact at the MA Chidambaram Stadium did just so as he registered the best figures for a CSK bowler against MI with a four-wicket haul as the Afghan spinner removed Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Robin Minz and Naman Dhir to leave Mumbai leaving 118/7.
Nathan Ellis joined the party in Chennai as he dismissed former CSK all-rounder Mitchell Santner for 11 off 13 deliveries.
Khaleel also registered a three-fer as he came back to remove Trent Boult for just a solitary run to further enhance the bowling unit’s efforts.
Another ex-CSK player, Deepak Chahar, chipped in with some useful runs towards the fag end of the innings as he added 28 runs off 15 balls to help MI post 155/9 in 20 overs.
