When asked if her decision to take on the role come from her passion for challenging herself as an artist, Kidman admitted, “Yeah, it did actually. And yeah, I call myself a character actress. I don’t consider myself sort of lead act, movie star kind of thing. I love creating characters, and that was what Mimi (Cave) and I talked about, is how to create her as a character."
Kidman revealed that the process of developing Nancy’s character fascinated her, especially when it came to capturing her innocence and wonder—qualities she hadn’t fully explored in her previous work. “The accent was a huge part of it as well. And I think also there’s an innocence that I found really appealing. And then a sense of wonder, which I hadn’t really had the chance to do," she shared.
The Big Little Lies star spoke about her deep-rooted love for exploring diverse roles, explaining, “Part of the journey of being artistic is going, hmm, what’s over here? What’s there? And trying things. I’m in a position where I get to try things, and I also get to support other people who wanna be on that similar path of exploring and trying things artistically."
Director Mimi Cave, who helmed Holland, was all praise for Kidman’s commitment to pushing boundaries. “Nicole takes bold choices. To do this with her and know that it was slightly different, watching her become Nancy was really magnificent and inspiring. If you can be someone like Nicole Kidman or Gael García Bernal, where you have this big career and you’re still taking risks, that shows that you really love it," Cave said.
Cave further discussed witnessing Kidman’s transformative process firsthand, calling it “unforgettable" to watch her embody Nancy with such depth.
Kidman, who has seamlessly balanced commercial success with critically acclaimed projects, concluded, saying, “It’s a magnificent gift of a journey that we’re all on. And I never forget how glorious that is because there’s so many people that don’t get to do that in their lives. And we do. I never take it for granted," she said.
