It’s been four decades now that Mohanlal has ruled the silver screen like a king—churning out hit after hit, redefining Malayalam cinema, and proving time and again why he’s THE Lalettan. Along with his equally iconic counterpart Mammootty, he has been the face of Malayalam cinema since the 80s. But here’s the big question: Could these two legends be the last of the superstars?

With changing audience preferences and a rise in content-driven films, the chatter about the decline of superstar culture has been making waves in the south too. Well, Mohanlal has some thoughts on this. In a recent chat with Hindustan Times ahead of the release of L2: Empuraan, the actor talked about what would happen if the superstar era comes to an end.

Talking about the supposedly dying superstar culture, the actor said, “These are just terms. Megastar, superstar are all just given by the audience. We had this chance of acting in numerous films. I don’t know people will now be able to complete 400-500 films. It is impossible now because the totality of the filmmaking has changed. The entire vision of the films has changed. That time, it was about the number of hits. It was a slow development, and finally, they will put that term – megastar or superstar. It is a title."

When asked if there will be more superstars in the future, the veteran actor replied, “There will definitely be great actors from the younger generation. They need good scripts. They have to get good directors and colleagues. I had the chance to work with amazing directors and brilliant co-stars. They created me, not me."

Mohanlal will soon be seen in Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2: Empuraan. . Touted to be one of the most expensive Malayalam films, Empuraan boasts popular stars like Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh and Suraj Venjaramoodu. L2: Empuraan also stars Game of Thrones-fame Jerome Flynn, Eriq Ebouaney, and Andrea Tivadar

The political action thriller is eyeing for a grand release on March 27. The much-awaited film will have its first show at 6:00 am IST on March 27, 2025. The highly anticipated L2: Empuraan is the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, bringing back Mohanlal in his iconic role as Khureshi-Ab’raam, aka Stephen Nedumpally. Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is directing once again, will also reprise his role as Zayed Masood.
