Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, on Tuesday dismissed the reports of a “possible coup" by the military saying that “false information is being spread in an attempt to mislead the people."

“As you know, since the interim government took office, there has been a festival of rumours in the media and social media. In order to destabilise the country, attempts are being made to mislead the people by spreading false information one after another," Yunus said in a statement as reported by India Today.

He further said that rumours are being spread in “innovative ways". “One picture is being added to another picture. Incidents are being made one after another. Such photo cards are being made and events from other countries are being circulated as incidents in this country and creating a stir on social media," he said.

His remarks came amid the social media buzz with rumours of the coup in Bangladesh after recent incidents of agitation led student leaders on streets, and the deployment of military personnel and security forces across the country, especially in Dhaka.

According to multiple media reports, Bangladeshi army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman held an emergency meeting on Monday. The meeting was reportedly attended by top army officers, including Lieutenant Generals, Major Generals (GOCs), commanding officers of Independent Brigades, and officials from the army headquarters.

Several reports further claimed that the Bangladesh Army might pressure the President to declare a state of emergency or remove Yunus altogether.

In response to the speculation, General Waker on Tuesday dismissed the buzz around emergency. “Do not react to provocation. We must stay focused on our duty to support the country’s stability," he said in an address at Dhaka Cantonment.

Yunus, who was appointed on August 8, 2024, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government, faces rising tensions within the political and military establishment.
